According to staff at ICAN’s European warehouse, this FL (faster and lighter) wheelset with a deep 50mm aero section carbon rim was a huge success when it came out a couple of years ago. Last year it was ICAN’s top-selling wheelset, and here are a few of the reasons why it is still very much in the minds and hearts of keen racing cyclists. Moulded from Toray T700 carbon cloth, it works well in aerodynamic terms, with a circular-section tyre seated on a wide 25mm rim. The overall cross section is a streamlined teardrop shape, which cuts through the air with the minimum of turbulence. It’s a rim that shaves seconds off personal best times. And it takes the tyres most people seem to be using, from 25mm to 28mm. These wheelsets accept clinchers, or the increasingly popular tubeless tyres, which roll sweetly and shrug off punctures. Connecting the rim to the hub are Sapim CX-Ray spokes, which weigh as little as titanium units, but are more rigid and resistant to metal fatigue. The spokes have an aero cross section which cuts drag, and they are butted to save weight. The spoking is 20 front, 24 rear, leading to straight-pull attachments on Novatec FS522SB or AS511SB hubs, turning on top quality sealed bearings from EZO. This racing wheelset got the nod of approval from world cycling body UCI, for competitions under its control. It comes with a two-year guarantee, skewers and carbon brake pads.
